Director Uršulė Bartoševičiūtė’s play based on Kata Wéber’s drama Pieces of a Woman (Pol. Cząstki kobiety) tells the story of a young couple expecting their first child. It is a powerful family drama driven by the strength and determination of its female characters.
The play’s 30-year-old protagonist Maja is confronted with a personal tragedy. In her attempt to reclaim her life, she is inevitably forced to question her past and rebuild her relationships from scratch. Pieces of a Woman paints a compelling portrait of a contemporary woman fighting for the right to her own body. After what has happened, Maja must recreate herself anew. Almost imperceptibly, the image of a harmonious and normal family begins to crack, revealing long-buried conflicts.
The performance employs cinematic storytelling techniques, an intimate narrative style, and a realistic attention to detail that deeply engages the audience.
Pieces of a Woman is the first professional play performed in Polish at a state theatre in Lithuania since the interwar period. The production includes Lithuanian surtitles.
Please note: The performance features nudity, intense lighting effects (strobe lights), strong language, loud music, the use of herbal (non-tobacco, non-nicotine) stage cigarettes, and depicts childbirth and the death of a newborn.
