The exhibition “Women at Dusk” by Jonas Daniliauskas, who is one of the most prominent representatives of Lithuanian colorist painting
According to art historian Dr. Nijolė Tumėnienė, this exhibition reveals a defining feature of Daniliauskas’ work – the female figure, often becoming the emotional centerpiece of the painting, the “tuning fork” that sets the mood: dreamy, playful, or romantic.
“Women at Dusk” offers a glimpse into womanhood as mysterious and multifaceted – embodying both the simplicity of rural life and the freedom of urban experience, with hints of mythological presence. She may appear as a nature-loving villager, a city woman relaxing in a Turkish bath, or even a guardian angel. In these works, the central focus is not the environment but the woman’s state of being – her connection to nature and the soft light of evening.
As Dr. NIjolė Tumėnienė notes, the artist no longer relies solely on landscapes to convey a sense of twilight. Instead, the feeling is now expressed through the figure of the woman – her elegant form, flowing movements, and emotional intensity. The color palette is rich and contrasting, charged with lyrical and nostalgic energy – visual poetry infused with echoes of the past and the artist’s personal romantic worldview.Jonas Daniliauskas is a painter whose art intertwines the experiences of classical modernism, the spirit of folk culture, and a deep, poetic connection to the Lithuanian countryside. His canvases reflect a timeless bond between people, nature, and tradition – full of mythological undertones and heartfelt emotion.
