Can music be seen as well as heard?
The media opera Čiurlionis: I See Music offers an immersive encounter with Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, one of Lithuania’s most original artists and composers. More than 200 of his paintings, together with his music, light and moving imagery, come together in an intimate 50-seat theatre in the heart of Vilnius.
Čiurlionis was both a painter and a composer, and his two artistic worlds were deeply interconnected. In this performance, his paintings do not simply illustrate the music, nor does the music serve as a background to the images. Instead, sound and vision unfold together as a contemporary story without words.
Surrounded by Čiurlionis’s imagery and music, the audience enters a world between reality and imagination, nature and the cosmos, darkness and light.
With only 50 seats, the Media Opera Theatre offers an unusually intimate way to experience the work of the Lithuanian artist whose paintings and music continue to fascinate audiences more than a century after his death.
