Europe Day – May 9 – A Day of European Unity and Solidarity. This day commemorates a historic event – the Schuman Declaration of 1950, which laid the foundations for peace in Europe and for today’s European Union, built on democracy, respect for human rights, and mutual trust. This year’s Europe Day is special – we are celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration.
On May 9 from 10:00 to 14:00, a fair dedicated to Europe Day will take place at Vincas Kudirka Square in Vilnius. The event is organized by the European Commission Representation in Lithuania and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
Residents of Vilnius and visitors to the city are invited to participate in quizzes, interactive games, educational activities, and win prizes – all of which will be available at the Europe Day fair in Vincas Kudirka Square, featuring up to 30 different booths. Embassies of various countries will introduce visitors to their cultures and invite them to try interactive dart games and the Finnish game “Mölkky.” The European Commission Representation in Lithuania will invite participants to take the “EU Exam” and test their knowledge, while representatives of EU programs will present opportunities for youth across the EU, such as Erasmus+ and the European Solidarity Corps.
Visitors to the fair will also be able to explore a virtual future and, using VR glasses, see what Lithuania might look like in 100 years. They can also capture the moment in a unique photo booth hosted by the European Parliament Liaison Office in Lithuania. Additionally, attendees will be invited to support sustainability initiatives by bringing unwanted clothes and finding new ones at a clothing swap organized by EU Climate Pact Ambassadors. NATO representatives and the Ukrainian Center will also present their activities at the fair.
At 10:45 a.m. on May 9, a ceremonial unveiling of a plaque commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration will take place near the House of Europe (Gedimino Ave. 16, Vilnius). The event is organized by the European Commission Representation in Lithuania.
During the ceremony, welcoming speeches will be delivered by Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Gintautas Paluckas and Head of the European Commission Representation in Lithuania Marius Vaščega.
At 12:00 p.m. on May 9, a solemn European Union flag-raising ceremony will take place at Lukiškės Square in Vilnius. The event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
