Ensemble NEXUM

The piano and wind ensemble Nexum was founded in the summer of 2022. The musicians further developed their expertise in chamber music at the Chamber Ensemble Department of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, in the class of Professor Dalia Balsytė.

The Latin word nexum means “connection” or “bond”, reflecting the ensemble’s artistic ambitions. Nexum seeks to create connections not only through music, but also through the relationships and interaction among its members. Equally important to the performers is their role as a link between the musical work and the listener — presenting musical material with both professionalism and clarity.

Nexum does not confine itself to a particular genre, style, historical period, or audience. The ensemble also adopts a flexible approach to its instrumentation: depending on the concept of a programme and the artistic vision behind it, the musicians perform not only as a full piano and wind quintet, but also in smaller formations. Alongside performing well-known works from the classical repertoire written for piano and wind ensemble, Nexum actively contributes to the creation of new works for this instrumentation both in Lithuania and abroad. One such initiative is a new composition by Greek composer Evelina Harkoftaki, currently being written for the Nexum chamber ensemble.

Nexum has already received significant international recognition at competitions, including the Grand Prix at the 6th Vilnius International Youth Music Competition “Premio Scarlatti”, as well as first prizes at the Fanny Mendelssohn International Competition and the Vivaldi International Music Competition. The ensemble has performed at a number of prominent cultural venues across Lithuania, including the Grand Hall of the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, the Grand Renaissance Hall of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, the Museum of Applied Arts and Design, the Panevėžys City Art Gallery, and the Lithuanian National Philharmonic.
