DANCE WITH DEATH by Kazimieras Brazdžiūnas

Dance with Death is Kazimieras Brazdžiūnas’s third solo exhibition at Pamėnkalnio Gallery, concluding a series of three shows. Alongside paintings, the show features objects, mosaics and works created in other media.

The exhibition was originally conceived as two separate shows sharing the same gallery space. Over time, the two ideas merged into a single project: Dance with Death emerged from the initial concepts, Your Own Fault and Death’s Testament.

The exhibition explores the fragile boundary between being and non-being, bringing together fragments of different identities and images dispersed across time. Wandering images, severed from their original contexts, find their way back to the physical surface of the canvas. Disillusionment and the collapse of illusions run through the works. Against the clarity of the white ground, the paintings open up space for the viewer’s own thoughts and interpretations. Rather than seeking a single correct answer, the exhibition invites the viewer to experience the form and materiality of art, leaving room for that which, with the passage of time, must remain unspoken.

Physical and virtual realities collide in Brazdžiūnas’s paintings, where images borrowed from art history, cinema, video games, television and popular culture come together in unexpected, often illogical sequences. Removed from their familiar contexts, they shed their original meanings and become part of the ever-changing flow of contemporary visual culture. For Brazdžiūnas, painting is not only a means of creating images but also a way of investigating them: he mimics the aesthetics of digital media, transfers painted images into virtual space, and continually tests the possibilities and limits of painting itself. Fragmentary cultural and personal motifs create a recognisable world that nevertheless resists coherent narrative – one in which the lived experience of the 1990s generation, irony and an imagination shaped by screens converge.

The exhibition will also take part in Vilnius Gallery Weekend, with an artist-led tour on 12 September at 12 noon. Admission to the exhibition and tour is free.
