Concert by harpist Joana Daunytė “The Legend of Čiurlionis”

What was the world like, and how did it sound, in which Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis lived? In this concert, you will hear harp arrangements of compositions by Čiurlionis and his contemporaries—French composers—performed by harpist Joana Daunytė. Her recital offers a rare opportunity to hear the royal instrument played by the sensitive fingers of the harpist.

During the concert, Daunytė’s album “Čiurlionis on Harp Strings” (2022) will be presented. “This creative project had been growing for a long time. I wanted to expand the harp repertoire with Lithuanian compositions. During my studies, being far away and often missing Lithuania, I decided to arrange works by M. K. Čiurlionis. His early works are very close to the harp’s nature, so I believe if there had been a harpist in the environment where he lived, we would have a wealth of this genius composer’s works for harp,” says the performer.

According to Čiurlionis researcher Prof. Vytautas Landsbergis, the harp is a special instrument that comes from times when the bowstring had not yet forgotten how to sound. “I understood this listening to Joana’s recording of M. K. Čiurlionis. In his paintings, the contours or silhouettes of a harp occasionally appear in nature forms. This is a sign that everything is music,” states Prof. Landsbergis in the album annotation.
