American Piano Sonatas: From Space to Consciousness<\/strong><\/p>\n

Twentieth-century American music is often understood as a search for identity between the established European tradition and the emergence of a new, distinctly American voice. This programme brings together three piano sonatas that reveal contrasting paths within this search.<\/p>\n

Aaron Copland\u2019s<\/strong> Piano Sonata is a model of clarity of structure and refined sonority. His music evokes a sense of space and openness, reminiscent of the vastness of the American horizon. Copland deliberately moves away from the complexity associated with European musical traditions, striving instead for simplicity while preserving an underlying sense of tension and discipline.<\/p>\n

Samuel Barber\u2019s<\/strong> Piano Sonata, Op. 26, represents an opposing aesthetic. It is an intense, dramatic, and highly virtuosic work in which the spirit of the European tradition remains strongly present. Its concluding fugue is particularly striking, standing among the most technically demanding passages in the twentieth-century piano repertoire. Barber combines the expressive intensity of Romanticism with a modern musical language, creating music that is deeply emotional yet rigorously constructed.<\/p>\n

The second half of the concert features Charles Ives\u2019s<\/strong> Concord Sonata, one of the most singular works in the history of piano music. More than a musical composition, it constitutes a philosophical reflection inspired by the American Transcendentalists: Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Bronson and Louisa May Alcott, and Henry David Thoreau.<\/p>\n

In Ives\u2019s sonata, traditional formal structures dissolve. Multiple musical layers coexist simultaneously; fragments of quotations emerge, while chaos and tranquillity stand in striking contrast. The work transcends the conventional boundaries of the concert piece, approaching a stream of consciousness, a philosophical text, or even a form of sonic meditation. Ives weaves together quotations from Beethoven\u2019s Fifth Symphony, early American hymns, folk melodies, bitonal harmonies, tone clusters, and moments of silence. The score itself contains annotations in both ink and pencil, reflecting the composer\u2019s continual return to the work, revising and reshaping it. The sonata has no definitive version. It remains alive.<\/p>\n

The programme can thus be understood as a journey: from the expansive spaces evoked by Copland, through Barber\u2019s emotional and virtuosic culmination, to Ives\u2019s musical and philosophical transcendence.
