On September 30, 2026, at 6 PM, the exhibition \u201cThe \u0160lapeliai \u2013 Colonists of Patagonia\u201d will open at the Marija and Jurgis \u0160lapelis House-Museum. It is a joint photographic research project by photographer Mykolas Juodel\u0117 and graphic designer Sandra Rivero, exploring the history of the \u0160lapelis family in Patagonia. The exhibition will be on view until November 28.<\/strong><\/p>\n

1897. Izidorius \u0160lapelis and his grandson Juozas set off with three horses on a journey across the harsh and unexplored Patagonian landscape towards Lakes Musters and Colhu\u00e9 Huapi. By decree of Argentina\u2019s then-president Jos\u00e9 Evaristo Uriburu, the area had been designated for a new colony, and generous amounts of land were promised to the settlers. After 18 days of travel, Izidorius and Juozas reached the shores of Lake Colhu\u00e9 Huapi, where they were met by several families from the local Tehuelche tribe. Using a mixture of clay and straw, the \u0160lapeliai made bricks and built the first house, thus beginning the history of the town of Sarmiento.<\/p>\n

In the Sarmiento area, the \u0160lapelis name remains well known to this day \u2013 streets, schools, and an airfield have been named after the family. Locals refer to them as pioneers: the \u0160lapeliai established the town\u2019s first library, Juozas \u0160lapelis became Sarmiento\u2019s first photographer, and Kazimieras \u0160lapelis is known as a forerunner of aviation in Patagonia.<\/p>\n

Alongside the photographs taken by Mykolas Juodel\u0117, the exhibition presents Juozas \u0160lapelis\u2019s archival photographs, excerpts from his diary, and other documents bearing witness to the history of the \u0160lapelis family in Patagonia.<\/p>","protected":false},"featured_media":236116,"template":"","categories":[12,10],"tags":[],"ticket-vendor":[],"class_list":["post-236115","event","type-event","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-nemokami-renginiai","category-parodos"],"acf":[],"aioseo_notices":[],"aioseo_head":"\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t\n\t\t
