The Middle Ages<\/strong> is the term used to describe the period from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the fifth century to approximately the thirteenth through fifteenth centuries. The Italian poet Francesco Petrarch coined the term Dark Ages to characterize this era, thus establishing a long-lasting myth of Europe\u2019s intellectual and cultural stagnation. Although Renaissance humanists viewed the era as overshadowed by the achievements of classical antiquity, the significance of the Middle Ages should not be underestimated. It was during these centuries that the foundations of modern Europe were laid: the founding of universities, the emergence of systems of municipal self-government and law, and the invention of printing that produced a genuine information revolution. These and many other innovations of the period irreversibly transformed the world and paved the way for subsequent technological progress.<\/p>\n

The tiled stove<\/strong> was one of the innovations of the late Middle Ages that remains in use to this day. In the thirteenth century, Europe\u2019s climate began to cool, creating a need for more quick and efficient ways to heat interior spaces. The first such stoves appeared in the Alpine region. Over time, they became not only functional heating devices but also important interior decorative features. Their tiles were impressed with a wide variety of images that people of the time could read much as we read comic books today: noble coats of arms, scenes from the lives of saints, mythical creatures and animals, instructive allegories, and depictions of courtly life, including hunting, knightly tournaments, music-making, and other pursuits. Such heating installations were affordable only to the wealthy nobility.<\/p>\n

This late medieval innovation reached the Grand Duchy of Lithuania from neighbouring lands with little delay. By the fifteenth century, stoves were already being built from both wheel-thrown, vessel-like tiles and flat decorative tiles. Gothic stove tiles have been found in Vilnius and Trakai, at the residence of the Grand Duke of Lithuania, and in places inhabited by state officials and wealthy townspeople. Tiles bearing identical motifs, as well as state and dynastic coats of arms\u2014including the Polish Eagle and the emblems of the Gediminid and the Jagiellonian dynasties\u2014have been found in both Lithuania and Poland. These crafts form the foundation of this international exhibition. The exhibition features artifacts from the collections of the Museum of the Origins of the Polish State in Gniezno and the National Museum in Kielce, as well as the National Museum\u2019s Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, the National Museum of Lithuania, and the Trakai History Museum.<\/p>\n

We invite visitors to immerse themselves in the fantastical and magical world of the late Middle Ages, to discover that the symbols that appeared centuries ago and the creatures born of the medieval imagination remain part of our everyday lives, and to reflect on the meanings they continue to hold in contemporary culture.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The exhibition \u201cMedieval Comics\u201d opens<\/strong> on the 23rd<\/strong> of September 2026 at 6 PM<\/strong> in the Bastion of the Vilnius Defence Wall.<\/p>\n
