\u201cUN\u0116\u201d \u2013 AN EVENT OF THE \u201cTHEATRE \u2013 A LIVING HISTORY\u201d CYCLE<\/strong><\/p>\n

A performance inspired by the diaries of legendary actress Un\u0117 Babickait\u0117-Baye<\/p>\n

Playwright, director and performer<\/strong> \u2013 BIRUT\u0116 MAR, set designer \u2013 DMITRIJUS MATVEJEVAS, costume designer \u2013 JOLANTA RIMKUT\u0116, choreographer \u2013 EDITA STUNDYT\u0116, composer \u2013 ANTANAS KU\u010cINSKAS.<\/p>\n

\u201cUn\u0117\u201d<\/strong> is a performance based on a play written by Birut\u0117 Mar and inspired by the diaries of actress Un\u0117 Baye-Babickait\u0117 (1897\u20131961). The play \u201cUn\u0117\u201d was among the winners of \u201cVersm\u0117s 2009\u201d, a festival of contemporary Lithuanian drama. The author later created a performance based on the play.<\/p>\n

The performance features photographs from the collections of the Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum.<\/p>\n

Birut\u0117 Mar:<\/p>\n

\u201cUn\u0117 Babickait\u0117 was one of the most prominent and colorful figures in Lithuanian theatre of the last century, an actress and director who performed in Hollywood films and on stages in New York, Washington and Paris.<\/p>\n

Her diary, written in Paris in 1930\u20131932, seemed to be asking to be brought to the stage \u2013 Un\u0117 knew how to look at her surroundings through the eyes of a playwright, with self-irony, passion and humor. She was a person of an exceptionally beautiful soul, quite extravagant \u2013 she married her first cousin, Vytautas Grai\u010di\u016bnas, whom she met in America, and remained happily married to him throughout her life. She especially revered and idealized theatre. Unfortunately, after returning to Lithuania before the war, Un\u0117 was not recognized by Lithuanian critics and hardly performed at all. Soon, her fate took a tragic turn \u2013 in 1951, she was exiled to Siberia, and her husband died in a labor camp, followed later by years of loneliness in Kaunas\u2026 Yet Un\u0117 remained Un\u0117 \u2013 she organized evenings, recited poetry, and never lost her sense of humor or inner radiance.<\/p>\n

I discovered so many parallels between Un\u0117\u2019s biography and my own life! Like me, she studied in St. Petersburg and performed in film and theatre. After returning from her studies \u2013 before leaving for America \u2013 she directed at the State Theatre in Kaunas (I, too, after studying in St. Petersburg, staged my diploma performance \u201cHappy Days\u201d in Kaunas). She was also interested in Eastern culture, traveled extensively, and performed in several languages\u2026<\/p>\n

I thought that through the character of Un\u0117, it might also be possible to reflect on my own theatrical experiences, to create a performance about THEATRE \u2013 its enchanting and fragile illusion. And about our lives, which, like a performance, rush past us \u2013 a mirage of existence\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the performance, writer and author of books on artistic biographies ALDONA RUSECKAIT\u0116<\/strong> will present the creative legacy of U. Babickait\u0117, one of Lithuania\u2019s first professional actresses and directors, and will speak about the activities of Lithuanian artists in emigration during the first half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n

A discussion<\/strong> with the audience will follow, featuring writer A. Ruseckait\u0117 and the performance\u2019s creative team, moderated by Birut\u0117 Mar.<\/p>\n

Spectators who have purchased tickets are also invited to register for a guided tour<\/strong> of the collections of the Lithuanian Theatre, Music and Cinema Museum, taking place before the performance at 5:15 PM.<\/p>\n
