A two-part play based on Patrick Marber’s Closer

Open Circle Theatre presents AQUARIUM, a gripping stage adaptation inspired by Patrick Marber’s acclaimed play Closer.

At the heart of the story are four strangers brought together by chance and drawn into an emotionally charged confrontation shaped by love, desire, personal insecurities, and profound existential loneliness. Their individual choices lead them into a situation that feels at once deeply familiar and hauntingly dreamlike—where intimacy becomes a nightmare and every decision has lasting consequences.

Blending theatre, cinema, and music, AQUARIUM invites audiences of every kind—those who know, those who don’t, the empathetic and the cynical, the hopeful and the disappointed—to recognize themselves on stage.

“It’s a lie. A collection of sad, beautifully photographed strangers, and all those wealthy art connoisseurs claim it’s wonderful because it’s exactly what they want to see. The people in the photographs are lonely and unhappy, yet the world they inhabit looks beautiful. The exhibition is comforting—which is a complete lie. And what could be more appealing than one big, sweet lie?”

The cast features beloved Open Circle actors Giedrius Kiela and Judita Urnikytė, alongside rising actor Matas Pranskevičius and Karolina Kildaitė, making her stage debut.

“Lying is the most fun you can have without taking your clothes off. But it’s even better if you do.”

Director Ieva Stundžytė, known for exploring the complexity and discomfort of human relationships in her previous productions, once again turns her attention to the intricate kaleidoscope of intimacy in AQUARIUM.

“Why isn’t love enough?”
