Bartholomew Fair

2011-08-26 | participated in the event
Town Hall Square

In the eve of the St. Bartholomew’s day, the 24th of August of 1495, the Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander confirmed the status of the first guild in Vilnius. The ruling privilege was granted for the goldsmiths. Since then, the St. Bartholomews day became an important celebration for Vilnius craftsmen: the biggest festivals were taking place on the St Bartholomew’s day.

The St. Bartholomew’s fair is revived each year, with a great event reconstructing crafts, arts and guild traditions of late medieval ages and renaissance.

This year, special event will concentrate on the guild of Vilnius potters, which was established 430 years ago.
