The Union of Lublin and its Epoch in Jan Mateika’s Creative Work

from 2009-11-18 to 2010-03-28

The exhibition is organised by Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw, the National Museum in Warsaw, the National Museum in Krakow, the Polish Institute in Vilnius, the National Museum "Palace of the Sovereigns of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania" and the Lithuanian Art Museum. The international art exhibition "The Union and Lublin and its Epoch in Jan Mateika’s Creative Work" has been arranged on the occasion of the 440th anniversary of the Union of Lublin. The National Museum in Warsaw and the National Museum in Kracow lent Jan Mateika’s picture "The Union of Lublin" and his other works. This international art exhibition is a part of the "Presentation of Poland in Lithuanian" programme financed from the funds of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.

The central piece of the exhibition is one of the most famous historic pictures of Jan Matieka "The Union of Lublin". It was painted in 1869 when commemorating the 300th anniversary of the Union of Lublin. This work of art is the beginning of Jan Matieka’s second creative period marking the artist’s conscious transition from criticism of history permeated with pessimism to portraying glorious and victorious moments of Poland and the Republic of the Two Nations. In 1870 Jan Matieka was presented with the highest award of France – the Order of the Legion of Honour (established by Napoleon Bonaparte as far back as 1802) for this work of art.

This exhibition of Jan Matieka has been held for the third time in Vilnius.
