Ranaissance in Spain and Portugal
2012-02-04 | Event starts: 18:00
Have you ever considered the deep levels of cultural heritage in the vast repertoire of the King of Instruments – the pipe organ? Did you know that the oldest surviving manuscripts of organ music go back to the times of "Decameron" by Boccacio? Would you like to hear what kind of music was played in the times of the Battle of Grunwald or the French Revolution?
Vilnius University Cultural Centre Concert Series "Seven Centuries of Organ Music" invites you to unforgettable time travel – to the world of Dante, Sheakspear, Columbus, Galileo, Luther, Napoleon or other historical figures and events where florished this mysterious and egzotic organ art. The project, which was started in 2011 and will last until summer of 2013, in 2012 will offer 10 unique lecture-recitals.
The listners will meet the Rennaisance and Baroque organ art of the Netherlands, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, England, and Italy. These musical cultures shaped the European organ landscape. Organist Vidas Pinkevičius will demonstrate the organ music of the time and present the composers in their historical and cultural context.
Because the concert repertoire of today‘s organ music can be considered only the surface of the vast treasure of organ art, music lovers deserve to meet every major European historical organ school. During the concerts, the listeners will get to know the music and composers, organ builders and instruments, cultural, historical, and political context in which florished this magnificent organ art.
Dr. Vidas Pinkevičius is an active promoter of organ improvisation and the organ art and popularizes this instrument through various lectures, seminars, demonstrations, and recitals. He graduated from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre in Vilnius with Bachelor‘s and Master's degree in Organ Performance.
