Orin, although a vigorous working woman, is planning to go to Mount Narayama this year. Anyone in the village who reaches to age of seventy makes the trip in winter for the good of the poor village. By going in winter, one would never come back... This powerful film reflects the selflessness of hard working people bound to poverty in the remote villages of olden times.

The Ginza area in Tokyo in 1950‘s. Miyako, the owner of a jazz club, is asked to hire Shoichi as a musician. Although reluctant to do so as he is recently out of jail, circumstances force her to. Under Miyako’s training, Shoichi begins to blossom and the two of them begin having feelings for each other

February 6th, 18:30 Akitsu Onsen (1962)

In the summer of 1945, a student Shusaku is in the depths of despair. His country has been left in a shambles after its defeat in the Pacific War, and he himself has tuberculosis. One day he attempts suicide, but is saved by Shinko, whose mother owns a hot spring inn in the remote mountain town of Akitsu.

 

Their ways get separated when Shusaku leaves to Tokyo. Seven years later, Shusaku returns to Akitsu on business. He is shocked to hear that the inn was sold after Shinko's mother's death, and that Shinko is living alone. Shinko visits Shusaku and asks him to commit suicide with her. But Shusaku dismisses her plea with a laugh..

After Iwaki is murdered and Azuma's sister is kidnapped, he breaks all the rules to dish out his particular form of justice.

February 9th, 18:30 Boiling Point (1990)

Masaki is a gas station attendant who plays for a local baseball team called the ''Eagles''. Or, at least he wears an Eagles uniform, for when he does play, which is infrequently, he pays no attention to the game and always messes up. At work, too, he lives as if in a daze, which gets him in trouble one day when he fails to do a satisfactory job of cleaning a gangster's car. The gangster punches Masaki and complains to the boss, which somehow brings Masaki to life, sparking him to strike back at the gangster. But his opponent is a pro. He plays hurt and demands money from the gas station, endangering the station's very existence.
